I recommend this movie to any agnostic, atheist, or any freethinking individual who is up for some stimulating perspectives into the world of organized religion. Bill Maher, the host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, travels around America and the world to question religious people about their religion. He asks Muslims, Jews, and Christians humbling questions about their god. He asks them, “How could anyone believe in a talking snake?” Some people defend their beliefs adamantly, but some are just crazy. For example there as a lady that said she believed in the second coming of the lord and that she would be riding a white pony when he came and she would be in all his glory. Bill just listened in disbelief that someone could have such elaborate dreams about something that their mind could probably not fully comprehend. Next we have Jose Luis Miranda, a Puerto Rican ex-heroin-addict who firmly believes that he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Now, you might say that the craziest people were picked for the movie. But how much crazier is a man believing that he is the second coming Jesus Christ than someone who “simply” believes IN the second coming of Jesus Christ.
As soon as Bill begins to questions people’s faith and the grounds on which they base it on, some get up and just walk away or respond in a confrontational manner. Why would someone act like that? Some would speculate that they are harboring doubts in their own mind, and are so afraid that they respond with anger.
Whether you are agnostic, atheist, or even just a critical thinker, this movie certainly does pose interesting questions.
